Greetings and Remarks from Dr. Kamil A. Jbeily

On June 18, 2001, the Toyota USA Foundation, headquartered in Torrance, California announced funding five programs, one of which was the Texas Regional Collaboratives. The collaboratives received a three-year grant of $390,000. The Texas Regional Collaboratives program is housed at the Science Education Center of UT-Austin's College of Education.

The goals of the grant are to:
  • Empower Science teachers with the content knowledge and skills to improve their student achievement.
  • Develop the leadership capacity of teachers to mentor other teachers, hence help serve a larger number of teachers.
  • Serve an additional 1800 Texas science teachers through leadership academies, professional development, and mentoring.
In addition to participating in high quality leadership academies, teachers are expected to:
  • Mentor other teachers at the campus, district, and regional levels.
  • Develop and implement 5E Inquiry Lessons that represent innovations in science teaching to help improve student achievement.
  • Document the impact of the program on teachers and students.
  • Share their experiences through presentations at the local, regional, and state levels.
  • Publicize the program to the school and community.

On behalf of the Texas Regional Collaboratives Advisory Board, Planning Commitees, Project Directors, Instructional Teams, professors, administrators, teachers, and students who benefit from this grant, I want to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Toyota USA Foundation for this generous contribution to promoting the mission and goals of the Regional Collaboratives. We look forward to many years of collaboration and partnership with Toyota in the service of excellence and equity in our schools.
