GISD instructors honored for science teaching

John L. Miller, a fifth-grade teacher at Southgate Elementary, and Centerville Elementary fifth-grade teacher Linda Berryhill were honored at the 1998 Spring Texas Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Science Teaching awards program March 26 at the Radisson Hotel in Denton. Accompanying the teachers, who were among 43 in North Texas to earn the recognition, were Southgate principal Nelda Gentsch and Centerville principal Bob McDonald. Miller has been teaching 27 years and Berryhill 10 in Texas.The event was sponsored by contributions from Exxon Education Foundation.

Keynote speaker was state Sen. Jane Nelson. University of North Texas professor of physics Dr. Jim Roberts helped make the presentation of senate proclamations and certificates of achievement. Other guest speakers included: Kamil A. Jbeily, director, Texas Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Science Teaching; David Anderson, coordinator, Curriculum and Professional Development, Texas Education Agency; James P. Barufaldid, director, Science Education Center, University of Texas; and Blaine Brownwell, provost and vice president for academic affairs, University of North Texas.
