Mission

The mission of The University of Texas at Tyler Teachers of Mathematics Collaborative (UT^3MC) is to increase student achievement in mathematics through professional development focused on engaging, technologically driven, research supported pedagogical practices. Through encouragement and support, we seek to equip Tyler area teachers with the knowledge and experience to cognitively challenge their mathematics students and effectively improve their teaching practices.

Accomplishments

During our first year as a Texas Regional Collaborative in mathematics, we provided training to 154 in-service teachers, pre-service teachers, and administrators averaging 22.7 contact hours per participant. One group of 22 teachers averaged 75.3 contact hours during the school year. We matched a group of similar teachers to these 22 collaborative teachers and compared TAKS results from their students. In this comparison, we found students of collaborative teachers in Grades 6, 10, and 11 significantly outperformed the matching teacher population’s students. We cannot fully claim all of the effect, but we truly believe our collaborative was influential in creating these significant differences.

Our greatest accomplishment was hosting our first annual TRC conference where our collaborative teachers showcased lessons they implemented during the course of the year. Through this experience our collaborative teachers gained a better knowledge of teaching mathematics because they had to present their work to other teachers. This created an environment where our teachers had to truly think about their teaching of mathematics and its effect on student achievement.
